Corporal Mayne: Cops Used Colleague’s Funeral To Vent. The Central Committee of the Jamaica Police Federation has reiterated its call. They demand better compensation and support for the country’s police officers.
Detective Corporal Peta-Gay Williams is an executive member of the Federation. She made this appeal during her address at the funeral service for the late Corporal Kemal Mayne.
The service was held on Sunday, June 29, 2025, at the Portmore Seventh-day Adventist Church in St. Catherine.
Corporal Mayne was a 20-year veteran of the Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF). Unknown assailants shot and killed him near his home in Old Harbor, St. Catherine, Jamaica, on May 17.
His colleagues describe him as very hardworking and would arrive for duty two hours before the start.
Williams spoke on the welfare of the men and women of the constabulary.
“Every time an officer puts on a uniform they accept the burden of sacrifice for country, for community, for citizens who are sleeping peacefully in their beds while we are out there protecting them but far too often our protection is neglected, our contribution is undervalued and our compensation does not reflect our sacrifice,” Williams said.

Cpl Williams stated that the police are not asking for charity, but demanding justice, respect, fairness, and a livable income.
“Police officers deserve better pay. We deserve better support from all well thinking Jamaicans as we seek to make this land of Jamaica the place of choice to live work, raise families and do business. That is why we continue to call for a comprehensive support system including full health insurance coverage,” Williams said.

Williams said those who protect must also be protected, not as a privilege but as a right.
“Its time to stop treating the welfare of officers as an after thought. Let us build systems that honor us in life not just in death. Too often we hear loud voices when officers are accused but deafening silence when they are killed. Where is the outrage when an officer falls in the line of duty? Where are the statements, the protests, the calls for justice. Where were your voice when corporal Mayne was murdered. Is justice only reserved for some? Where is the balance? Where is the fairness?” Cpl Williams said.

Williams vowed that the JCF will not rest until Corporal Mayne’s killers are brought to justice.
