Authorities identified the deceased as Javon “Bossy” Basceosingh, 30, from Homestead, Spanish Town, St. Catherine.

According to reports, at around 2:00 p.m., a police team conducted an operation in Homestead when they spotted Basceosingh sitting on a wall. He reportedly jumped from the wall and ran into a nearby house.

The police pursued him, and upon entering the house, he allegedly pointed a handgun at them.

In response, the officers took evasive action and fired, injuring Basceosingh.

The police recovered a Glock pistol with a magazine containing four 9mm cartridges from the scene.

Then, they transported Basceosingh to the Spanish Town Hospital, where the authorities pronounced him dead.

Jamaican are growing weary of the frequency of fatal police shootings in their country.

Law enforcement officials said that at about 9:40 p.m., officers from the Kingston Central Police Division were on mobile patrol in Allman Town.

While on patrol, the officers received information that a man armed with a gun was walking along Liverpool Street.

Upon arriving at the location, the police saw a man flee from a premises on Liverpool Street. He ran into a nearby gully while holding a firearm.

The officers pursued the suspect and called for backup support from their colleagues.

The suspect then moved from the gully to a property on Hampton Street. While there, he allegedly took a man hostage.

The hostage manage to escape, and the suspect ran to the front of the property.

The police closed in on him, and instead of surrendering, he reportedly pointed his firearm at the police.

In fear for their lives, the officers took evasive action and fired at the suspect, resulting in him being shot.

He was transported to Kingston Public Hospital, where a doctor pronounced him dead.

So far in 2025, 122 Jamaicans have died as a result of police fatal shootings. This means the police have killed more than 24 people per month.
