Lawrence Tavern Shooting: Suspect Killed During Police Actions

Constable Andrew Wilson, the policeman who fatally shot Latoya “Buju” Bulgin in Granville, St. James, on May 17, has been charged with murder. He appeared before the St. James Parish Court on Wednesday after the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) determined that charges should be filed following an investigation by the Independent Commission of Investigations (Indecom).

Lawrence Tavern Shooting: Suspect Killed During Police Actions. St. Andrew North Police fatally shot a suspect and recovered an illegal firearm during a targeted operation in Lawrence Tavern, St. Andrew, on Friday morning.

Law enforcement identified the deceased in the Lawrence Tavern shooting as Andrew Richards, 39, a laborer and shopkeeper.

The fatal shooting reportedly occurred sometime after 5 a.m. in Tavern Gully, also known as George Mason Drive.

St. Andrew North Police stated that they initiated the operation in response to increased criminal activity in several communities within the Lawrence Tavern environment.

Reportedly, the suspects responsible for the increased criminal activities are said to be part of a criminal syndicate.

According to media reports, members of a criminal syndicate behind bars reportedly continue to influence illegal activities in the Lawrence Tavern space.

Areas of great concern to the police are Tavern Gully, King Weston, Rose Hall, Florence Hill, and Track Gate.

In 2024, police crime statistics indicated that nine murders occurred in the ordinarily quiet Lawrence Tavern.

Residents of Tavern Gully in Lawrence Tavern are disputing the police report about the Lawrence Tavern shooting. The police said Mr. Richards was involved in a shootout with them.

A relative told the media that the police allegedly took his cousin from his bed and killed him.

“They came around 4 o’clock this morning and shot the boy at 5:30. Now you’re telling us he was involved in a shootout with you when only three shots were fired? How can he be in a shootout with you when you took him out of his bed? You asked for a gun, and by the time you asked for one, the man got shot?” said the relative, who questioned the police’s version of events.

The relative also claims the police targeted the wrong person based on a conversation he had with the police team.

The same police officer stopped me again and asked, “Who owns that blue shop over there?” I replied, “The man you are looking for should be familiar to you. You already have him in custody.” The officer then said, “Basically, he is the one we came for.” I responded, “So you killed a man and then came to ask where he is? Have you wrongfully killed the wrong person?”

INDECOM is investigating the Lawrence Tavern shooting.
