On Friday night, September 18, 2026, the alleged leader of the ‘One Away Gang’ lost his life during a confrontation with an armed police officer on North Street in Kingston, Jamaica.
The police subsequently identified the deceased as 26-year-old Amani Malcolm, also known as “Bling Dawg.”
According to reports, the police neutralized Malcolm after he allegedly grabbed a police officer’s M16 rifle, resulting in a struggle.
Authorities stated that the incident occurred at approximately 10:40 PM, at the intersection of North Street and Pink Lane in downtown Kingston.
The police stated that a mobile patrol team observed a man with a bulge in his waist standing at the intersection of Pink Lane and North Street. One officer exited the vehicle and instructed the man to raise his hands.
Instead of raising his hands, the man allegedly removed a firearm from his waistband and pointed it at the police. As a result, the officer discharged his service pistol, causing the man’s firearm to fall from his grasp, and a struggle ensued.
During the struggle, both men fell to the ground. Malcolm seized the officer’s M16 rifle, which prompted the officer to discharge his pistol again, hitting Malcolm. He fell while still holding the officer’s M16 rifle.
While on the ground, Malcolm aimed the M16 at the officer, who took cover, and another officer discharged a single round from his service pistol, hitting Malcolm.
The police allegedly recovered one Glock 26 pistol with a magazine containing five 9mm rounds that was in Malcolm’s possession.
Authorities say a bystander sustained injuries during the incident.
Police transported Malcolm to Kingston Public Hospital, where a doctor pronounced him deceased upon arrival.
Police say angry residents took to the streets to protest Malcolm’s passing.
After the tragic incident, a large group of angry residents protested at the scene and later at the hospital.
They set fire to an abandoned vehicle on the lower section of North Street.
Another demonstration took place around 8:45 AM on Saturday, during which residents ignited another fire.
The police reported that a man, who refused to participate in the protest, was assaulted and set on fire by an alleged gang member. He was subsequently admitted to the hospital.
The police stated that Malcolm was the leader of the One A Way gang based in Denham Town, Kingston.
