Detectives in St Catherine, Jamaica, have charged a suspect with murder and multiple firearm-related offenses. The charges stemmed from the shooting death of a businessman in Central Village, St. Catherine, on Tuesday, August 18.
Detectives identified the accused as Devon McPherson, also known as “Jay” or “Rat Poison,” a forklift operator from New Harbor Village 3, Old Harbor, and Big Lane, Central Village, St. Catherine.
McPherson faces several charges, including murder, possession of a prohibited weapon, unauthorized possession of ammunition, using a firearm to commit a felony, and conspiracy to commit murder.
According to the Central Village police, around 10:00 a.m. on August 18, the businessman, identified as Smith, was standing on a roadway in his community when McPherson and another man approached him. The two men brandished firearms and opened fire, hitting Smith multiple times in the upper body.
Smith reportedly fled the scene and hid in an unfinished building, where he eventually collapsed. The police responded to the scene and found Smith suffering from gunshot wounds.
Officers quickly transported Smith to the Spanish Town hospital, but the authorities pronounced him deceased upon arrival.
Following the incident, detectives launched an investigation. During the investigation, detectives identified McPherson as a suspect and secured a warrant for his arrest.
On Friday, August 28, McPherson turned himself in to the police, who interviewed and charged him.
The authorities have yet to schedule a court date for McPherson.
Detectives in Manchester, Jamaica, have charged a Man ian Alleged Murder Plot Caught on Voice Note.
Detectives in Manchester, Jamaica, have charged 53-year-old Paul Malcolm, a farmer, with conspiracy to commit murder. He allegedly sent a voice message plotting to kill a 43-year-old man from District Pike, northern Manchester.
The charges stem from a July 22 incident where a woman was robbed at a bus stop in Greater Portmore.
The suspects approached the woman, claimed she resembled a criminal, and demanded her phone while one pointed a firearm at her.
Police apprehended both men later that day in Half-Way Tree after the woman identified them.
A court appearance date for the accused has not yet been assigned by investigators.
According to the police reports, the murder plot was thwarted after Malcolm sent a voice note via WhatsApp to another person on August 18, in which he planned to rob and kill the complainant on Saturday, August 29.
Malcolm, who is also known as “Bumpa,” confessed to accidentally sending the voice note to a farmers’ group, which led to the investigation.
On Friday, detectives charged with conspiracy to commit murder and using computer data for malicious communication. Investigators stated that Malcolm provided a caution statement admitting to the offenses and participated in a question-and-answer session.
The authorities have yet to schedule a court date for Malcolm.
Security guard charged after woman injured in Spanish Town dispute.
Detectives from the Spanish Town Police Division have charged a 24-year-old security guard with assault causing grievous bodily harm and unlawful wounding. These charges arose from a dispute with a woman on Hillcrest Avenue in Spanish Town, St. Catherine, on Wednesday, August 26.
Detectives have identified the accused as Krystal Wright from Wynters Pen, Spanish Town, St. Catherine, Jamaica.
According to reports, around 9:00 pm, Wright and the woman became involved in a verbal dispute which escalated.
Detectives reported that during an altercation, Wright allegedly used a stone to strike a woman in the face, resulting in a broken tooth and various wounds.
The victim reported the incident to the police, and on Friday, August 28, they arrested and Wright and subsequently charged.
The authorities have scheduled Wright to appear before the St. Catherine Parish Court on Tuesday, October 20.
