Gunfire erupted in two communities, Trenton, New Jersey, and Chicago, less than 15 minutes apart on Sunday morning. The attacks left three people dead and 23 others injured as police in both cities search for answers, according to news reports.
Trenton police responded to reports of multiple gunshots in a neighborhood near 194 Locust Street at approximately 12:25 a.m. on Sunday, according to a statement from Trenton Mayor W. Reed Gusciora.
Upon arrival, first responders discovered 11 individuals with gunshot wounds. Authorities pronounced two deceased, while responders transported nine others to Capital Health Regional Medical Center. Police have not confirmed the names of the deceased.
Mayor Gusciora stated that one of the individuals killed, was a man who had been trying to turn his life around after being released from prison.
New Jersey Gov. Mikie Sherrill said law enforcement had briefed her on the shooting.
“As local law enforcement continues to investigate, my Attorney General remains in close contact with officials on the ground,” Sherrill wrote in a post on X Sunday. “I’m thinking of the families who lost loved ones, those who were injured, and the Trenton community.”
The police have not announced any arrests, or a motive for the shooting.
Police responded to mass shooting in Chicago over the weekend.
Officials reported that 12 minutes earlier, hundreds of miles away, police in Chicago responded to another mass shooting incident. Chicago police stated that officers were dispersing a large gathering on the South Side at approximately 11:37 p.m. local time on Saturday night when gunmen opened fire into the crowd, injuring 15 people.
A 35-year-old man suffered multiple gunshot wounds and was transported by first responders to the University of Chicago Medical Center, where he later passed. Additionally, police reported that 14 other individuals—six men and seven women, aged between 21 and 47—sustained injuries in the incident.
With 15 victims, this incident is the largest single shooting in Chicago this year, surpassing a June drive-by shooting that left 14 people wounded in a South Side neighborhood, according to a report from FOX 32 Chicago.
The police have not disclosed the purpose of Saturday’s gathering or the circumstances that may have resulted in the shooting. Additionally, investigators have not provided a description of the gunmen.
Cook County Crime Stoppers is offering a reward of up to $10,000 for any information that leads to an arrest.
On Sunday, Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson condemned the shooting and pledged to tackle the issue of gun access in the community.
