Road Safety Trends: April Sees 16% Drop in Fatalities. Exciting news from the Island Traffic Authority (ITA) as we see a promising trend in road safety! Five months into the year, and we are celebrating significant double-digit reductions in road fatalities.
According to the latest statistics released by the ITA on Friday, April witnessed 26 road fatalities resulting from 22 tragic crashes. This marks a remarkable 16 percent decrease in fatalities. There was also a 15 percent drop in fatal crashes compared to April 2025, clearly demonstrating efforts to improve safety on the road.
These positive changes are undoubtedly a testament to the impact of recent Road Safety initiatives and dedicated enforcement efforts.
Road safety: Private motor vehicle driver fatalities increased by 133%
Notably, the month saw a 27 percent reduction in pedestrian fatalities, a commendable achievement for our community. However, we must acknowledge an increase in private motor vehicle driver fatalities. These rose by 133 percent, equating to four more lives lost compared to the previous year. Improved road safety remains critical for drivers.
This highlights the critical need for us all to work together towards improving driver safety. Motorcyclists represented 12 percent of fatalities in April, amounting to three individuals. Encouragingly, there has been a substantial decline of 57 percent in motorcyclist fatalities compared to April 2025. This shows that safety on the road continues to progress.
Tragically, five senior road users and one child lost their lives in vehicle collisions during the month. It’s disheartening to note that vulnerable road users—pedestrians, pedalcyclists, motorcyclists, and pillion riders—accounted for half of April’s fatalities. This reinforces our commitment to enhancing road safety for everyone, especially those at greater risk. St Ann experienced the highest fatalities with five reported deaths, followed closely by Manchester and Westmoreland with three each.
Thankfully, St James had only one fatality, and Trelawny and St Elizabeth reported none. In total, the ITA has recorded 93 fatalities from 82 traffic crashes since the year began. This marks an impressive 31 percent decrease in fatalities and a 32 percent decline in crashes, all thanks to a stronger focus on safety on our roads.
This progress fills us with optimism and confidence in our ongoing Road Safety efforts. Together, we can continue to make our roads safer for everyone!
