UTech students detest violence against women–they demand action on Anisa Dilworth’s case

On Monday morning, May 19, 2025, staff and students of the University of Technology Jamaica (UTech) staged a protest. They protested over the death of fellow student Anisa Dilworth. The police believe the skeletal remains they found on Saturday, May 17, 2025, belongs to Anisa.

Violence against women. Dilworth, a first-year Pharmaceutical Technology student at UTech, had been missing for nearly two weeks.

On Saturday, the police received a report around 11:30 a.m. about the discovery of human skeletal remains on a beach in Portmore, St. Catherine, and promptly commenced an investigation.

Even though formal identification is pending forensic analysis, investigators believe the remains belong to Anisa. This belief is based on evidence found at the scene.

UTech’s student union organized the protest. Its president, Percival Roberts, stated that the demonstration was essential to raise awareness. He encouraged swift action against anyone responsible for Anisa’s death.

“It is our duty as students to stand in solidarity for our fellow students and against violence against women. We had to ensure that this issue does not fade away,” he emphasized. “We are doing this to honor Anisa and to advocate against violence against women,” Roberts said.

Meanwhile, Superintendent Mark Harris, the head of the St. Andrew Central Police Division, announced that the police have detained a driver from the ride-sharing service inDrive for questioning.

Besides, the police are seeking another individual for questioning, although they have not disclosed any details about this person.
