A suspect traveling to Kingston, Jamaica, was arrested by US law enforcement after CBP allegedly discovered more than $53,800 in undeclared cash in their possession at Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport.
According to the United States Customs and Border Protection (CBP), agents intercepted the passenger on July 1 while the individual was preparing to board a flight to Jamaica.
During inspections of outbound passengers, the traveler claimed they were not carrying any currency. However, a subsequent search reportedly uncovered $53,800 in cash.
Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) responded to the scene and arrested the individual on federal money laundering charges.
Federal prosecutors have accepted the charges under Title 18, U.S. Code, Section 1956, which relates to money laundering.
Authorities have not disclosed the identity of the passenger.
Daniel Alonso, Director of Field Operations for CBP’s Miami and Tampa Field Office, stated that criminal organizations often rely on bulk cash smuggling to move illicit proceeds across international borders.
CBP emphasized that there is no limit to the amount of money travelers may carry into or out of the United States. However, anyone transporting more than $10,000 must declare the funds by filing a FinCEN Form 105.
The agency warned that failing to declare currency or making a false declaration can result in the seizure of the money and may lead to civil or criminal penalties.

Police in St. Catherine unalive a suspect after he allegedly pointed a gun at cops during a targeted operation in Crescent District, early Monday morning.
Authorities have yet to identify the deceased. However, they said he is of brown complexion, about 5ft 10, wearing a brown pullover shirt and sporting a plaited hairstyle.
According to the authorities, at about 5 a.m. on July 20, a police team carried out a targeted raid in the Crescent community in search of wanted persons.
During the raid, the police entered a premises and heard sounds coming from what appeared to be an abandoned motor vehicle.
The officers checked the vehicle and allegedly found a man sitting inside.
Upon seeing the police, the man reportedly pointed a firearm at the officers.
In fear for their lives, the cops took evasive action and opened fire, hitting the suspect.
As a result, the suspect fell clutching a Hi-Point pistol fitted with a magazine containing four rounds.
The cops swiftly transported the injured man to the Spanish Town hospital, where the medical staff pronounced him dead.
The Independent Commission of Investigations (INDECOM) has initiated a probe into the shooting incident. INDECOM stated that it will keep the public updated as the investigation progresses in the coming weeks.
