Murder and Arson Investigation Underway in St Ann
Authorities in St Ann are currently investigating a case involving the tragic death of 80-year-old Sylvia Barrett in Spring Garden, Bamboo. The incident, which occurred on Wednesday, May 2, 2024, has prompted a comprehensive inquiry by law enforcement.
The distressing chain of events unfolded when Barrett’s granddaughter, who resides nearby, noticed flames engulfing her grandmother’s residence and promptly alerted the police and fire department. Despite courageous attempts by residents, including Barrett’s granddaughter, to suppress the fire, the damage to the property was substantial.
Upon arrival, firefighters worked diligently to contain the blaze, and subsequent examination revealed the harrowing discovery of Sylvia Barrett’s lifeless body within the charred interior. She was found in the dining room, her hands and feet bound with a distinctive orange electrical wire. Furthermore, her face and limbs were covered with what appeared to be female attire, and she bore signs of exposure to the fire.
Forensic specialists meticulously processed the scene, supported by additional personnel from the St Ann Division. The investigation is now in the hands of dedicated detectives from the St Ann’s Bay Criminal Investigation Branch, who work tirelessly to unravel the circumstances surrounding this tragic event.
Suspect Faces Charges for Killing Police Officer and Injuring Vendor in St. Ann.
ST ANN, Jamaica – A man has been charged with the shooting death of constable Ricardo Fairclough and the injuring of a woman in St Ann’s Bay, St Ann. The incident occurred on Monday, April 15, when Fairclough intervened in the robbery of a vendor along Bravo Street around 8:25 p.m.
The accused, 29-year-old Oshane Davis of Bamboo Spring in Trelawny, faces charges of murder, along with several other offenses. After being wounded in the altercation, Davis was charged following a question-and-answer session. He also faces charges of shooting with intent, possession of a prohibited weapon, and unauthorized possession of ammunition. His court date is currently being arranged.
According to the police, Davis and two other men attacked the vendor, resulting in her being shot in the face and upper body. As they attempted to escape, they were confronted by Fairclough, leading to an exchange of gunfire in which Fairclough sustained fatal gunshot wounds to the chest, while Davis was shot in the abdomen and left hand.
Fairclough and the injured vendor were taken to the St Ann’s Bay hospital, where Fairclough tragically passed away upon arrival, and the vendor remained hospitalized for treatment. Davis, on the other hand, was taken to the Falmouth Hospital by his associates, where he was later arrested and charged following investigations.
Additionally, one of the alleged gunmen, Siraldo Butler, also known as ‘Siri,’ was fatally shot by law enforcement officers following Fairclough’s death. A police operation was launched to apprehend Butler, culminating in an armed confrontation in which he was fatally shot on Snake Lane, Steer Town, in the parish.
23-Year-Old Man Charged with Fatal Stabbing of His Cousin in St. Elizabeth.
A 23-year-old man, Romane Deenwell, also known as ‘Chineyman,’ a farmer from the Donegal district in Brighton, St Elizabeth has been charged with the fatal stabbing of his cousin, Onandi Bell, also known as ‘Nandi,’ a 22-year-old construction worker/laborer from the Compton district in St Elizabeth.
According to the police report, the tragic incident occurred during a dispute between the two cousins on the morning of April 17, resulting in the accused allegedly using a sharp instrument to fatally wound Bell. Despite being rushed to the hospital, Bell was pronounced dead.
This heartbreaking event has deeply affected both families, and our thoughts are with all those impacted by this distressing situation.
The accused court appearance date is pending.
The police charged a suspect in the 2023 fatal St Andrew home invasion.
A 29-year-old man, identified as Romario Codner, has been charged by the police for the shooting death of Leroy Morgan in his home on Dunrobin Avenue in St Andrew in August 2023.
Codner, also known as ‘Chunky,’ is facing charges of murder, illegal possession of a firearm, and illegal possession of ammunition. The Half-Way Tree police made the arrest on Tuesday in connection with the murder of 50-year-old Mason Leroy Morgan.
According to police reports, at approximately 2:15 a.m., Morgan was at home when Codner and another man allegedly entered his house armed with firearms and opened fire.
Morgan sustained multiple gunshot wounds and despite being rushed to the hospital, he was pronounced dead. Codner was apprehended and charged on Tuesday, April 30. A court date for his trial is currently being arranged.
More than 100 cartons of cigarettes were confiscated on March Pen Road, Spanish Town.
A joint police-military task force executed a successful operation today in the community of March Pen Road in Spanish Town, St Catherine, resulting in the seizure of over 100 cartons of cigarettes.
The team initiated the operation to locate firearms, narcotics, and individuals with outstanding warrants. As a result of their efforts, a man was apprehended along March Pen Road in possession of a loaded firearm and subsequently taken into custody.
Furthermore, two other individuals were detained on suspicion of various infractions. After a thorough search of the premises, the team uncovered over 100 cartons of cigarettes suspected to be contraband.
“We applaud the team’s exemplary work and will sustain these proactive operations to combat criminal activities within the region,” stated Superintendent Hopton Nicholson, the head of the St Catherine North Police Division.
