The St James Parish Court has issued a warrant for a woman who has been impersonating a rental agent.

ST JAMES, Jamaica—On Wednesday, April 24, 2024, the St James Paris Court issued a warrant for a woman accused of impersonating a rental agent online and defrauding a victim of JM$ 35,000.

The defendant, Yanique Gordon, is charged with obtaining money by pretense. Gordon did not appear in court despite being scheduled to appear.

During the court session presided over by Judge Natiesha Fairclough-Hylton, the court clerk presented a medical document from the St. James Health Department stating that Gordon was unfit and had been granted sick leave from April 19 to May 5.

The court was also informed that the Crown was awaiting a document from the Bank of Nova Scotia (BNS).

The judge issued a warrant based on the medical document justifying Gordon’s absence from court, with the execution being postponed until May 8, when Gordon is scheduled to appear in court.

According to court documents, on August 10, 2022, the complainant came across an online advertisement for an apartment available for rent in the Westgate area of St James.

The complainant contacted the provided number and subsequently transferred the specified sum to the accused as a security deposit. Despite several attempts to contact the accused, the complainant was unsuccessful.

As a result, a report was filed with the bank and the police. Gordon was later arrested and charged.

Security guard removed from post at UWI following rape, abduction allegations.

KINGSTON, Jamaica—According to an Observer Online report, a 25-year-old security guard has been removed from The University of the West Indies Mona campus after it is alleged that he attempted to abduct and rape a female child under the age of 16.

The allegations are that on Monday, April 22, 2024, at about 2:15 pm, the young girl was visiting her grandmother on the campus and was walking through an access point on Gordon Boulevard when the guard allegedly intercepted her.

It is alleged that the guard diverted the child from her path and allegedly attempted to sexually assault her. She then raised the alarm.

A passerby, who heard the child, intervened and reported the incident to the campus police.

The university’s Director of Security, Norman Heywood, told Observer Online that the guard attached to the King Alarm firm attempted to escape but was apprehended just outside the campus gates.

Heywood shared that while the private firm has been providing services for the university for over a year, he noted that this particular guard had only been placed on the campus two weeks before the incident.

The director said that going forward, additional background checks and closer monitoring will be necessary to help ensure safety.

The university is said to be providing counseling for the girl and her grandmother, who is said to be an employee of the university.
