MANCHESTER, Jamaica—In a tense encounter in Spalding on Wednesday, a police corporal bravely faced armed men and sustained injuries to his chest during a gun battle.
Superintendent Carey Duncan, head of the Manchester police, recounted the harrowing events, explaining that the corporal was among a police team responding to a call in the Spalding community when the incident occurred.
Upon their arrival at the location, a group of armed individuals opened fire on the police, leading to a fierce gun battle. During the exchange of fire, the policeman was struck in the chest, but thankfully, his bulletproof vest shielded him from more serious harm.
The injured officer was swiftly transported to the hospital, where he received the necessary medical care before being discharged.
Superintendent Duncan revealed that a Glock .40 pistol was seized by the police at the scene of the shooting.
Man wanted in Jamaica Apprehended in the Dominican Republic and Extradited
An alleged fugitive who fled the island on the weekend after the authorities issued a warrant for his arrest in connection with a shooting in St. Mary in March 2024 was deported from the Dominican Republic on Tuesday, April 23, 2024, following his capture.
The police identified the suspect as Bobby Bailou, a 26-year-old Annotto Bay, St. Mary resident.
The police charged Bailou Tuesday with several offenses, including wounding with intent, possession of a prohibited weapon and ammunition, and using a firearm to commit a felony.
According to a Radio Jamaica News report, the St. Mary Police had issued a warrant for the arrest of Mr. Bailou after they linked him to an alleged attempted murder of a mason in Annotto Bay on March 26, 2024.
The mason was shot multiple times during an alleged attack reportedly carried out by Mr. Bailou.
The wounded man survived the attack.
The police reported that Mr. Bailou boarded a flight to the Dominican Republic on Sunday, April 21, 2024.
The local police alerted their counterparts in the Spanish-speaking country, and the Jamaican fugitive was captured on his arrival and later deported.
Bailou’s court appearance date is pending.
Passenger’s Attack in Linstead: Cabbie Slain, Three Others Injured.
A taxi operator lost his life, and three passengers sustained injuries following an attack by a gunman posing as a passenger in Linstead, St Catherine, on the night of April 23, 2024.

The deceased has been identified as Gabian Lewis of Benbow district in Guy’s Hill, St Catherine.
According to reports, shortly after 10 p.m., Lewis was driving his taxi along King Street in Linstead with four passengers when one requested a stop.
Upon exiting the vehicle, the individual drew a firearm and discharged multiple rounds within the car before fleeing the area on foot.
Tragically, Lewis succumbed to his injuries at the scene while residents assisted the three injured passengers to the hospital for treatment.
The authorities are currently investigating the incident, as the motive for the shooting remains unknown.

The St. Mary police have launched an investigation into yet another stabbing incident involving three high school students in the parish.
According to a report by Radio Jamaica News, a dispute among students from Tacky High School took a violent turn at Gayle Square following school hours.
The altercation resulted in the three boys sustaining knife wounds, requiring immediate medical attention.
This distressing event adds to a concerning pattern of violent incidents involving high school students across the entire island. Just last week, a student from Irwin High School in St. James tragically lost his life after being fatally stabbed during a fight with a group of his schoolmates.
