Saturday’s fatal gun attack comes on the heels of a series of robberies and murders reportedly being carried out by a syndicate of criminals from across Westmoreland.
The syndicate has reportedly allied with other criminals from outside of the parish, who are now targeting business establishments, including supermarkets and bars.
As a result, business operators are on edge, fearing for their lives, workers, and properties.
According to reports, the law enforcement hierarchy is collaborating with business owners to devise strategies to stem the upsurge in robberies and murders.
But Deputy Superintendent of Police Adrian Hamilton, head of the operations portfolio in the Westmoreland Police Division, is confident that the police will get a grip on the situation soon. He said the following in a Gleaner interview Friday night, December 1, 2023:
“I am confident that it’s only a matter of time before we crush the latest surge, which we believe is being committed by greedy, reckless terrorists who are hell-bent on creating mayhem in the parish.”

The escalating crime wave in Westmoreland raises serious concerns about public safety and highlights the urgent need for improved security measures. By collaborating with business owners and other stakeholders, law enforcement can develop comprehensive strategies to combat the criminal activities plaguing the area.
The authorities should increase police presence in high-risk areas, enhance surveillance systems, and implement targeted patrols to deter criminals. Community engagement initiatives should also be strengthened to foster trust and cooperation between law enforcement agencies and residents. By working together, the community can play an active role in identifying and reporting suspicious activities, assisting in the apprehension of criminals, and contributing to a safer environment for all.
It is essential that swift action is taken to apprehend those responsible for Owen James’ senseless killing and bring them to justice. The community must stand united against violence and work towards a future where everyone feels secure in their daily lives.
