JCF launched into a traffic incident involving an 11-year-old boy.

ST MARY, Jamaica – The Police High Command confirmed on Tuesday, November 28, 2023, that it launched an investigation after a TikTok video showing an 11-year-old boy reportedly restrained and pepper-sprayed by a police officer in Oracabessa, St Mary last Friday, November 24, 2023.

A video of the incident, showing a cop using his knee and arms to hold the boy in place on the ground, has gone viral.

The incident in question, reported by the JCF (Jamaica Constabulary Force), unfolded following a routine traffic stop conducted by the police. The driver, who happened to be the father of the young boy involved, was pulled over on suspicion of a traffic violation. Unfortunately, what began as a seemingly ordinary encounter swiftly spiraled into a physical confrontation between the police officer and the driver, with the boy finding himself caught in the middle.

The child intervened in a brave yet misguided attempt to protect his father, leading to a regrettable turn of events. The situation escalated, and in the chaos and confusion, the child ended up assaulting the police officer. It is important to emphasize that violence should never be condoned or encouraged in any circumstances.

Understanding the need to maintain public safety and enforce the law, the police officer was left with no choice but to restrain the young boy. The use of force, while regrettable, was deemed necessary to defuse the situation and prevent any further harm from being inflicted upon anyone involved.

Incidents such as these serve as a stark reminder of the importance of ensuring proper communication, de-escalation techniques, and restraint during encounters with law enforcement. We must continue to build trust and understanding between communities and their local police departments to prevent similar incidents from occurring in the future.

“The JCF, along with other state authorities, is conducting a thorough investigation into the matter. It includes reviewing the incident, collecting necessary statements, and seeking additional footage to ensure a comprehensive understanding of the events,” the JCF said.

The Child Protection and Family Services Agency (CPFSA) and Jamaicans for Justice (JFJ) have issued press releases questioning the police officer’s action.

The CPFSA said it provided immediate on-the-spot counseling to the boy and his six-year-old sister, who was also in the vehicle at the time of the incident. The agency said it will also offer follow-up counseling sessions for the children this week.

On Monday, November 27, the JFJ issued a statement condemning what it described as the use of excessive force by the police.

Fitzroy Robinson, the child’s father, is hoping some justice will come from the incident that he said has left him and his family traumatized.

“My son is a quiet boy. He is only talkative around his peers, and right now, I don’t know what is going through his head,” said Robinson.
