Licensed Firearm Holder Charged After Assault Allegation. Police in Portland have arrested and charged a 78-year-old licensed firearm holder with assault and a firearm-related offense. The charges stem from an alleged confrontation between the accused and another man in the community on May 23.
The Port Antonio police reported that around 4 p.m., the complainant was walking along a roadway in Port Antonio when the accused allegedly confronted him.
According to the police, the accused, who was driving his vehicle, stopped beside the complainant. Then, he exited his vehicle, approached the man, and allegedly threatened him.
Moments later, the accused allegedly brandished his licensed firearm and stuck the barrel of the weapon against the complainant’s side.
As a result, the complainant lost his balance and fell to the ground.
Moments later, the complainant gathered himself, scampered away at lightning speed, and raised an alarm.
The police responded swiftly and arrested the licensed firearm holder.
Investigators later charged the accused after a question-and-answer session conducted in the presence of his attorney.
He faces charges of common law assault and using a firearm to commit a scheduled offense.
The court appearance date for the accused, whose identity the police have withheld, is pending.
Kingston man freed of gun charges over identification failures
On Friday, May 29, a Gun Court Judge acquitted a man from Kingston of charges related to wounding with intent and firearm offenses. The complainant admitted in Court that he could not identify the alleged attacker.
Avanasha Bryan faced charges of possession of a prohibited weapon, unauthorized possession of ammunition, and wounding with intent.
The Court ordered Bryan’s released after the complainant, during cross-examination by attorney Sheldon Campbell, acknowledged that he could not clearly identify who had shot him.
Campbell argued that because the Crown’s witness failed to identify his client, Bryan should be discharged. The judge upheld this argument and acquitted Bryan on all counts.
According to the Crown, around 8 p.m. on December 11, 2023, the complainant was near his gate on Third Street in Kingston when he was confronted by Bryan and another man.
The complainant reported seeing a silver-colored firearm, fleeing the scene, hearing gunshots, and losing consciousness.
He later awoke at the Kingston Public Hospital, where it was found that he had sustained gunshot wounds to his back, foot, and buttocks.
The complainant reported the incident to the police, who launched an investigation. They later arrested and charged Bryan.
