Jamaica College: Police charged grade 11 student with assault

Law enforcement officials have confirmed that a Jamaica College student has been arrested and charged. The student was featured in a viral video where he appear to repeatedly struck a fellow schoolmate last Thursday.

Acting Senior Superintendent Mark Harris, the commanding officer for St Andrew Central Police, confirmed to The STAR on Friday that the police have charged the Grade 11 student with assault occasioning bodily harm.

Even so, investigators have withheld the teenager’s name.

Sources close to the situation stated that the police charged the student on Thursday, April 23, 2026. But the police later released him on station bail.

According to reports, the incident happened at the Old Hope Road campus of Jamaica College last Thursday. The incident later gained attention after a 56-second video surfaced on social media.

In the amateur video clip, several students appeared to surrounding a schoolmate. One boy appears to grab him by the collar and repeatedly slaps him across the face multiple times.

Another Jamaica College student appears to strike the boy with what appears to be a belt. You could hear questions about money coming from the group in the background during the confrontation.

Jamaica College Reports Admission of Theft by Viral Video Victim

A statement issued by the school last week stated that the victim who had admitted in writing to taking “certain items” belonging to a group of boys he was socialising with.

The items reportedly included a jacket, a pair of glasses and cash.

The statement further claimed that the boy initially denied taking the items, but later admitted to it and agreed to return them. However, Jamaica College said he only partially complied and missed agreed deadlines for full restitution.

According to The STAR, the school’s account says the situation escalated when the “aggrieved student” confronted him over the outstanding items, leading to the physical altercation captured in the video.

The school said it has interviewed all students involved in the presence of their parents. Plus, the school said each noy has submitted signed statements.

jamaica College officials said each boy will meet with the disciplinary committee for further actions. The police are still investigating the situation.
