Security Minister Announced Security Measures for Party Events

Security Minister announced new safety measures for party events in Jamaica. The recent shooting at the Big Wall post-carnival event has prompted the government to take a stronger stance against the rising violence at entertainment events. Moreover, speaking before Parliament on Tuesday, Dr. Horace Chang stated that the government will not allow criminals to take over Jamaica’s party scene.

During his contribution to the Sectoral Debate, Chang pointed to what he described as “emerging trends” in violent incidents at parties. He assured the country that the authorities are moving decisively to contain the threat.

“We will not allow criminals to disrupt our entertainment,” Chang stated, adding that the country has reached a “tipping point” through continued investment in policing and technology.

Minister Chang stated that new operational measures would be put into place, especially for large-scale events. Promoters must now incorporate enhanced security arrangements into their planning.

Among these measures, Chang proposed the deployment of specialized police resources, including armored vehicles. These would be deployed by the Firearm Licensing Authority (FLA) as part of a broader strategy to ensure the safety of patrons.

Under the new system, authorities expect event organizers to take proper measures to ensure safety during gatherings.

Security minister said the new operational measures are for the safety of patrons

Chang stated that the government is not trying to hinder promoters; rather, they must collaborate with law enforcement ahead of major events. This is necessary to ensure sufficient security coverage.

The security minister also highlighted the importance of intelligence-led policing. He revealed that security forces often act preemptively to prevent planned attacks on events.

Chang’s remarks came after several recent violent incidents at parties, raising public concerns about safety in Jamaica’s entertainment spaces.

On April 12, multiple individuals were shot during an event at Big Wall at the Ranny Williams Entertainment Centre. This incident sent shockwaves through the party scene. Before that, on Good Friday, another shooting at Jarrett Lane sparked widespread debate. More recently, in St. Elizabeth, a female patron was left nursing gunshot wounds. She was shot by another attendee.

There has also been an increase in police interventions at events. This includes an operation in Mount James, where law enforcement personnel intervened at a party amidst security concerns.

These developments reflect the worries raised in a recent report by The Gleaner. The report pointed to a troubling pattern of violence disrupting entertainment activities across the island.

The security minister maintained that while the Government does not seek to stifle the entertainment industry, stricter enforcement is necessary. Furthermore, closer collaboration among promoters, the police, and communities will be necessary to ensure public safety.
