GOP Healthcare Bill Passed: What It Means for ACA Subsidies. The GOP members of the US House of Representatives passed a healthcare bill on Wednesday. According to reports, it’s likely to fail in the Senate. Some Republicans are concerned that the legislation allows enhanced Obamacare subsidies to expire at the end of the year.
Lawmakers voted 216-211 to pass the bill they named, the Lower Health Care Premiums for All Americans Act, which is really a sham.
Republican Rep. Thomas Massie joined Democrats in voting against legislation. It is comprised of three bills that have passed the House. These bills have never been signed into law.
It should be clear to everyone that House GOP members are not interested in extending the enhanced Obamacare subsidies. Furthermore, Congress’s legislative session ends this Friday, and the enhanced tax credits will expire on December 31. As a result, lawmakers will leave Washington without reaching a compromise to prevent higher premiums for millions of consumers.
Many centrist GOP lawmakers are frustrated with their leadership. Despite overwhelming Republican support for their misleading bill, the legislation does not extend Affordable Care Act (ACA) subsidies.
Four Republicans who voted for the GOP Healthcare Bill also voted for the Democrats’ proposal
Four Republicans decided to join a Democratic proposal. This proposal requires the House to vote on a three-year blanket extension on Wednesday morning. This move effectively bypasses Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) and sets up a separate vote for next year. But that will be too late for people who depend on the ACA subsidies.
Among the Republican detractors who signed the Democrats’ measure, known as a discharge petition, was Rep. Brian Fitzpatrick (R-PA). He had proposed a separate petition aimed at extending the subsidies for two years, along with reforms to tackle fraud.
Fitzpatrick informed reporters that there have been no discussions about including an amendment to his bill that would also negate the Democrats’ three-year extension petition.
