Media Manipulation: Jamaica and the Cuban Doctors Narrative. In the aftermath of Wednesday’s March 26, 2025, visit to Jamaica by U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio, one of Jamaica’s premiere news outlets published an article. The article had an ambitious, manipulative headline.

“Jamaica rebuffs Rubio push against Cuban doctors.”

The first paragraph reads:

“Jamaica on Wednesday rebuffed a push by U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio. He aimed to sever a program that brings in Cuban doctors. These doctors have become critical to healthcare in fellow Caribbean countries despite allegations of labor exploitation.

Let’s be clear: that was media Manipulation. Because Prime Minister Holness has no standing or power to rebuff any demand the U.S. makes. Panama rebuffed the U.S. concerning the Panama Canal but quickly bowed to U.S. pressure like a dog with its tail between its legs.

So, it is now clear that the Cuban healthcare workers’ situation was a smokescreen. That particular issue was not on Rubio’s agenda.

Media manipulation. It’s crucial to understand the intent behind the headline, “Jamaica Rebuffs Rubio’s Push Against Cuban Doctors.” It was strategically crafted to portray Prime Minister Holness as resolute. But this is a distortion of the truth. This manipulation of the narrative by the media significantly impacts public perception.

Because almost one week before Rubio arrived in Jamaica, the government broke its silence on the Cuban doctors issue. This was after the Jamaican people demanded the the government side with the Cuban doctors.

So, on Thursday, March 20, 2025, Jamaica’s Foreign Minister, Kamina Johnson Smith, made an important statement. She stated that the Government of Jamaica has reaffirmed its commitment to the longstanding and crucial Cuban medical cooperation program.

media manipulation. By misrepresenting the facts, the Observer’s headline could potentially mislead the public and distort their understanding of the situation. This is a worrying consequence of media distortion.

It’s important to note that the primary concern during a U.S. Secretary of State’s visit to another country is typically security, not contentious issues like the Cuban doctors program.

Prime Minister Holness is a weak and compromised leader whose back is against the wall. There are too many things hanging over his head.

There is no way he could have said no to any U.S. demand.
