Councilor Demands Police Body Cameras After Fatal Shooting

Councilor for the Old Harbor South Division, Dr. Kurt Waul, called for a thorough investigation into the latest fatal police shooting in Old Harbor Bay, St. Catherine.

The shooting occurred Friday in the Settlement community. It was the third questionable police fatal shooting since the start of the month.

Authorities identified the deceased as Jamar Fothergill, also known as ‘Zagga.’

A resident told the media she heard a commotion followed by gunshots about 4 o’clock.

Residents were upset with the police and disputed their claim that they killed Mr. Fothergill in a shoot-out.

Concerned residents reported that the police had detained Mr. Fothergill multiple times without ever charging him with anything.

Additionally, they accused the police of removing closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras from the scene of Friday morning’s shooting. The residents also expressed concerns that the police officers were not wearing body cameras during the incident.

Meanwhile, Councilor Waul has joined residents in appealing for the police to be fitted with the cameras.

“We need the police officers to wear body cameras. I am appealing for this once again. It is the only way to reassure citizens that nothing inappropriate occurred. If the national security budget has been tripled in recent years, then prioritizing police body-worn cameras should be essential.”

The councilor stated that the recent shooting complicates police work in Old Harbor Bay. This follows another fatal shooting on Terminal Road two weeks prior.

Cops launched probes. INDECOM and the JCF have launched separate investigations.

Five homicides have been committed in Old Harbor Bay since the start of the year.
