Security Woes at U.W.I.: Students took to Social Media.

University Hospital of the West Indies, UHWI is under Investigation. The Integrity Commission of Jamaica has initiated an investigation into breaches identified by the Auditor General in a report concerning procurement breaches at the University Hospital of the West Indies (UHWI).

Security Woes at U.W.I.: Students took to Social Media. On February 12, students at the University of the West Indies raised concerns about inadequate security on the Mona campus.

Many students took to TikTok to raise awareness about security woes at the U.W.I. Mona campus. They highlighted various incidents, including armed robberies.

Security Woes at U.W.I. Guild President Perry Cummings Jr. stated that the university administration has been slow to address these security concerns.

Mr. Cummings acknowledged that the campus is unsafe but cautioned against the spread of misinformation.

He recently spoke in an interview with Radio Jamaica News about the security woes at U.W.I. Mona. He confirmed that a group of students were robbed near the Mona Chapel.

Additionally, Mr. Cummings indicated that the administration has largely ignored the students’ proposals for safety solutions.

“There has been conversation around improving the security, getting more patrolling done. We’ve not seen that. That’s just the reality. I don’t think the university is taking this as seriously as they should. I would have submitted reports and proposals as to ways in which the campus can be safer and feel safer for students, and we’re yet to see that,” he said.

Campus registrar Dr. Donovan Stanberry confirmed Wednesday morning that students were robbed in the vicinity of ATMs across the campus over the weekend.

Dr. Stanberry said the management is reviewing its security arrangements to ease security woes at U.W.I. Mona.

“We’re going to have to focus on those areas where our students are vulnerable, particularly at nights around the ATMs, which you know are obvious targets and so on. And we’re going to step up our own patrol. We do have an elaborate security architecture on campus involving private security, that is, King Alarm and the Mona Police, so we have to look at our resources and see how we can best deploy them s

After a meeting between the university and students on Wednesday afternoon, Cummings informed Radio Jamaica News of some developments. The administration has agreed to address the security woes at U.W.I. Mona by enhancing patrols and improving communication with students.

Mr. Cummings has welcomed these commitments but urged students to stay vigilant.

“I’m feeling good; I wouldn’t say 100% satisfied because until I see these things with my own two eyes, unless we see a reduction in the criminal activity unless we see these things being prioritized, we are still at square one. But yes, they facilitated and engaged us and gave commitments to ensure that we have an even safer campus for the carnival season.”
