Year-End Crime Statistics: Jamaica Sees Major Reduction in 2024

Jamaica Police Apologized for posting an Innocent Man as Wanted. The Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF) has issued an apology. They mistakenly published the photo of an innocent man. They incorrectly identified him as wanted for murder.

Year-End Crime Statistics: Jamaica Sees Major Reduction in 2024. In his state of crime message, Jamaica’s Commissioner of Police, Dr. Kevin Blake, reported significant reductions in major crimes, including murder.

The commissioner reported an 18 percent reduction in murders and a 10 percent decrease in shootings. Rape and robberies also experienced declines of 25 percent and 21 percent, respectively.

Blake delivered the Year-End Crime Statistics on Thursday, December 27, during his end-of-year message to the public.

Commissioner Blake attributes the reported decreases to an intelligence-driven approach and enhanced visibility.

Still, Commissioner Blake has not addressed the over 180 police killings so far this year. He stated that most police operations are conducted without any bloodshed.

“The JCF’s clear preference is to bring persons before the courts to face justice rather than engage in fatal confrontations. This is evidenced by the many wanted persons and high-value targets who have been pursued, arrested, and brought before the court this year,” Blake said.

Plus, the commissioner stated that the police seized over 400 weapons from gunmen without fatal consequences.

He noted that INDECOM is investigating a series of police shootings, including a recent triple killing in St James.

Still, the commissioner would be neglectful if he did not address those who questioned the JCF crime statistics.

“There are some who seek to undermine our efforts by questioning the integrity of our data. Let me address this issue head-on. The Year-End Crime Statistics we show do not lie.

They are rigorously compiled, analyzed, and transparently shared with the public. Casting doubt on these figures erodes the trust and confidence that we have painstakingly built over time. Blake contended this.

According to the year-end crime statistics, the divisions with the most severe increases in murders were Manchester, with 17 percent, and St Andrew North, with a 14 percent increase.

The divisions with the most significant reductions in murders are Kingston Central, at 40 percent; St James, at 34 percent; and Hanover and St Ann, at 35 percent.

Blake emphasized to citizens that their safety was a top priority while warning criminals sternly.

“To those offenders who believe they can evade the reach of justice, let me be clear. We know who you are, and our resolve will not waver,” he warned.
