Heroes Weekend and Traffic Law Impact: Road Safety Gains.

Deadliest Days For Road Users: Friday through Sunday

As Heroes Weekend (October 25-27) approaches road safety authorities are mindful that this is a time usually linked with increased partying and road travel. Increasing partying and road travel increases the possibility of serious accidents and road fatalities.

The vice-chairman of the National Road Safety Council, Dr. Lucien Jones, said Jamaica has seen a noticeable decline in road fatalities so far this year. And he credits the new Road Traffic Act as a significant contributor.

Jones said that compared to the corresponding period in 2023, Jamaica has registered 11 percent fewer fatalities, dropping from 335 to 298.

Additionally, Jones said there were ” significantly fewer motorcyclists and pedestrian deaths than last year.” He cites increased public awareness and rigorous police enforcement.

According to Jones, the statistics show a promising trend that the number of motorcyclist fatalities has dropped, with 100 deaths reported so far this year and pedestrian fatalities decreasing from 65 to 60.

Still, Dr. Jones cautioned that despite the improvements, the council target is a 50 percent reduction in road fatalities by 2030.

“We need to do much better. Our ultimate goal is to reduce fatalities to about 212 from a baseline of over 400,” Jones said.

With the Yuletide season also approaching, Dr. Jones urged party-goers to practice safe driving, especially regarding substance use.

“Do not drink and drive. Do not smoke ganja and drive. Designate a sober driver to ensure everyone gets home safely,” he said.

During Heroes Weekend in 2023, three persons died on the nation’s roads. Jones warned against speeding, a common issue during holidays.

“We are encouraging people not to speed, and the police will be out enforcing speed limits and conducting breathalyzer tests,” he said.

As Heroes Weekend and festive seasons loom. There is also great concern about car thefts under the guise of rental services.

Assistant Commissioner of Police Gary McKenzie, head of the police’s Public Safety and Traffic Enforcement Branch, emphasized the importance of following proper protocol in vehicle rentals to mitigate these risks.

McKenzie said one of the most important things for car rental companies is verifying the identities of their customers. He advised that contracts should be clear regarding the use of the vehicle.
