Former Prime Minister PJ Patterson has criticized the noticeable decline in Jamaicans’ respect for their compatriots.

Former Jamaican Prime Minister PJ Patterson

In his message to mark Emancipendence celebrations, Mr. Patterson referred to the second stanza of the National Anthem, which says, “Teach us true respect for all.”

He says recent utterances from people in the political sphere and people in positions of authority have belittled the nation.

Mr. Patterson says a small but noisy number of Jamaica’s public speakers are consistently mean-spirited and vulgar.

He believes crudeness in expressing perspectives reduces the public’s belief in institutional legitimacy and undermines respect for opposing views.

The 88-year-old former Prime Minister calls on political figures to set an example for the nation’s children in their conduct during discourse on essential matters.

He also encouraged those in public office to ground their arguments in reason and desist from making personal attacks and offensive speeches.
