The UWI student accused of torturing his ex-girlfriend in his dormitory at the University of the West Indies campus appeared in the Kingston and St Andrew Parish court Tuesday, March 21, 2023, for a bail application hearing. However, the court delayed the hearing.
According to reports, the hearing could not proceed because the court was told that the accused man Matthew Hyde’s attorney, Peter Champagne KC was absent due to another matter he was involved with in a different court.
Matthew Hyde was remanded, and the bail application was scheduled for March 27, 2023.
Matthew Hyde is facing charges of assault occasioning grievous bodily harm, use of malicious communication, assault occasioning actual bodily harm, and false imprisonment.
$50K or 50 days for motorists caught driving without a driver’s license
A St Cathrine parish judge ordered a motorist to shell out $50,000 for his freedom or spend 50 days in prison after the police caught him driving without a driver’s license.
Marvin Bowie was shocked when Parish Judge Nathalie Creary-Dixon leveled the fines on him in the St Catherine Parish Court.
The judge ordered Bowie to pay $30,000 or spend 30 days in prison for driving dangerously on a public thoroughfare. In addition, the judge fined him $10,000 or 10 days in jail for driving without a valid driver’s license and for having no insurance coverage; the judge fined him $10,000 or 10 days imprisonment.
According to the police, on February 19, 2023, they stopped a motor car driven dangerously on the public thoroughfare by the accused. The police requested his driver’s and insurance card but failed to produce either document.
As a result, the police charged him appropriately, giving him a date to appear before the court.
