2024 Crime Stats: Jamaica Reports 1,114 Murders in 50 Weeks. Jamaica recorded 54 murders in the first two weeks of December, with 25 occurring in the first week and 29 in the second week.
After 50 weeks in 2024, there was an average of 22 murders committed each week. Crime, especially murders are a big problem for Jamaica.
When Prime Minister Holness was the Opposition Leader, he promised the Jamaican people that he would fix crime.
But, after nine years as Prime Minister, he has done little to significantly reduce crime. One of his more ambitious promises was that under his leadership, people would feel safe enough to sleep with their windows and doors open.
The latest 2024 Crime Stats released by the Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF) indicated that the country’s murder toll as of December 14 was 1,114.
The figure represents 238 fewer, or an 18 percent decline compared to a similar period in 2023.
Among the persons who got murdered last week were two teenage boys. Reportedly, both boys were gunned down execution-style along Airy Castle Road in Stony Hill, St Andrew.
Law enforcement officials identified the deceased as Jumaane Henry, 14, and Niquan Whitely, 16.
According to the latest 2024 Crime Stats, St James division tops the murder list, with 123 murders. Followed by St Andrew South with 116.
Westmoreland accounts for 97 murders, St Catherine North 92, and St Catherine South 81, rounding out the top five murderous divisions.
According to the 2024 Crime Stats, Portland remains the parish with the lowest number of murders, recording a total of 13 this year. So far, 15 out of 19 police divisions have experienced a decrease in murders, which is a positive trend.
However, the country must take further action to lower its overall murder rate. Additionally, other crime categories like shootings, injuries, rapes, robberies, and break-ins, have also declined year over year.
