Escalation of Protests in St Elizabeth Due to Electricity Shortage
ST ELIZABETH, Jamaica—Residents of St Elizabeth have once again taken to the streets, blocking roads to demand action from the Jamaica Public Service (JPS) company to restore electricity to their communities.

Protestors in Parrottee, southwest St Elizabeth, used debris to block the main road leading to their community, expressing their frustration over the prolonged outage.
The fishing village, which has been without electricity for five weeks, is witnessing severe repercussions, particularly among the local fisherfolk whose livelihoods have been greatly impacted.
The absence of electricity has led to the spoilage of catches, with fisherfolk struggling to preserve their produce without proper refrigeration. Even those who have resorted to using JPS-provided generators have found them inadequate for operating essential appliances like refrigerators.
Moreover, the electricity outage has disrupted the local water supply and left residents perplexed by exorbitant bills despite enduring weeks without power.
These demonstrations come in the wake of ongoing electricity issues, with roadblocks also occurring along the Holland Bamboo and Santa Cruz to Malvern main roads.
Furthermore, recent claims of regulatory failure by the Office of Utilities Regulation (OUR) have intensified public dissatisfaction, particularly with utility companies such as JPS.
PNP Urges NWC to Resolve ‘Severe Water Crisis’ Impacting Parishes
Opposition Spokesperson on Water, Ian Hayles, is urgently urging the National Water Commission, NWC, to take action in response to the severe water crisis impacting multiple parishes.
Mr. Hayles expresses deep concern for the residents of parishes such as St. Ann, Trelawny, and Manchester who are still without water following the passage of Hurricane Beryl.
He emphasizes that his appeal is driven by the growing frustration and struggles faced by the residents in these areas due to the water shortage. Mr. Hayles emphasizes that the NWC should not solely attribute the shortages to the Jamaica Public Service Company, JPS, and must have contingency plans in place for such situations.
Mr. Hayles urges the NWC to consider implementing alternative strategies to ensure adequate water supply to affected residents. These measures include deploying backup generators at treatment plants, increasing the frequency of water delivery to impacted communities, and collaborating with local authorities to identify and prioritize the areas in need.
Additionally, Mr. Hayles calls on Senator Matthew Samuda, the Minister responsible for water, to convene a meeting with the NWC and JPS to establish a timeline for restoring service to the affected areas.
