Government’s Request for Expedited Appeal Hearing in Constitutional Ruling Against DPP.

The Jamaican Government is seeking an expedited hearing by the Court of Appeal regarding the constitutional court’s decision involving DPP Paula Llewellyn.

Reports indicate that a case management conference is scheduled for Tuesday, May 28, 2024, at the Court of Appeal to determine a date for the appeal hearing. The Government aims for the hearing to occur within the next six months.

In April, the court affirmed the constitutional amendment passed in July of the previous year, which increased the retirement age for the DPP and the Auditor General from 60 to 65. However, it declared the amendment that allowed Llewellyn the option to extend her tenure as null and void.

Llewellyn, who reached retirement age in 2020, had received a three-year extension that concluded in September 2023.
