Six firefighters suffer electric shock while battling house fire; illegal connection blamed.
Six firefighters encountered a distressing situation in the early hours of Tuesday, 16 April 2024, when they were affected by an electric shock while bravely battling a house fire in Greenwich Farm, St Andrew.

It is with concern that we share that three of these courageous individuals are currently receiving care at the Kingston Public Hospital. However, the full extent of their injuries remains uncertain.
Commissioner Stewart Beckford, the esteemed leader of the Jamaica Fire Brigade, has stated that the injuries sustained by the remaining three members are not considered severe.
These dedicated firefighters, all men from the Trench Town Fire Station, swiftly responded to the call for assistance at 2:17 a.m. According to Commissioner Beckford, this distressing incident is believed to have been caused by an illegal electrical connection.
In a heartfelt appeal to Jamaican citizens, he said, “I just want to make a special appeal to Jamaicans to desist from this practice because we suspect that the fire would have started as a result of that, and we are also suspicious that it was an illegal connection that would have caused the injuries that the firefighters have sustained.”
Commissioner Beckford also emphasized the challenges in identifying such hazards during nighttime operations, stating, “It’s difficult to detect these things during firefighting operations at night. In the day, we encounter them and take the necessary precautions to ensure that we maintain our safety, but at night, when it’s dark, it’s difficult to see the illegal connection.”
Amid this ordeal, other firefighters valiantly extinguished the fire, demonstrating unwavering commitment to their duty.
