Two individuals in St. James have been convicted of charges related to cocaine possession.

Two St. James residents found guilty of attempting to smuggle cocaine disguised as pastries were convicted of breaching the Dangerous Drugs Act on Tuesday, March 19, 2024, when they appeared in the Parish Court.

Kediesha Johnson and Calvin Grant faced charges of possession, dealing in, attempting to export, and conspiracy to export cocaine. The conspiracy charge was dropped by the prosecution.

Johnson and Grant are set to be sentenced on May 9, with their bail extended.

According to the allegation, Ms. Johnson went to a courier company in Montego Bay on February 25, 2021, to ship a box to a recipient in Canada. The box was labeled as containing ‘cheese puffs’ and ‘plantain chips,’ but it was later discovered to hold nine ounces of cocaine.

Following investigations, the police arrested Ms. Johnson after she admitted that Mr. Grant had given her the package to ship. Subsequently, Mr. Grant was also arrested and charged.

The Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) has hit back at Opposition Leader Mark Golding’s criticism, firing back at his impatience over the ongoing investigation into the massive fraud at Stocks and Securities Limited.

During his Budget Debate presentation outside Gordon House on Tuesday, March 19, 2024, Mr. Golding raised concerns about the delays in charging more people in the case.

In a fiery statement on Friday, March 22, 2024, the ODPP countered that the Financial Investigations Division still needs to provide additional documents before any ruling can be made.

The ODPP made it clear that the initial documents regarding the ongoing SSL investigations were submitted to it in November 2023. Since then, the ODPP and the FID have been meeting to discuss the case and provide guidance to investigators on the missing material.

Furthermore, the ODPP revealed that the most recent set of documents from the FID was received on March 6, 2024, and a meeting has been scheduled for the end of March to review all the materials submitted thus far.

Reflecting on previous announcements, the ODPP reminded the public that the Financial Investigations Division had stated last August that more individuals would be charged in the case in the following months. However, they expressed frustration over the lack of cooperation from affected investors.

To date, former Stocks and Securities Limited wealth advisor Jean-Ann Panton is the only individual who has been charged, with her next court appearance set for May 27, 2024.

Looking ahead, the ODPP expressed eagerness to conclude its ruling and provide advice to the FID, which will then communicate these findings to the public at a time of their choosing.
