Senior citizen had to use their pension fund to settle bond.
An elderly gentleman who had stood as surety for a resident of Corporate Area found himself compelled to utilize his pension funds to settle a bail bond after Jamar Douglas, the individual he vouched for, absconded.
Douglas, facing charges of unlawful wounding, had been granted bail in the amount of $150,000. However, his repeated failure to appear in court led to a warrant being issued for his arrest.
The elderly gentleman, Vincent Williams, who had stood as surety, was summoned by the court to resolve the bond. On Thursday, he handed over $15,000 to the State in the Kingston and St Andrew Parish Court. This marked the final installment in a series of payments made by Williams to fulfill his obligation, which amounted to over $50,000.
“I had to use my pension to cover this. I really need to recover my funds,” he quietly expressed from his courtroom seat.
Williams indicated his intent to initiate legal action to retrieve the over $50,000 he was compelled to pay for the bond.
“How can I reclaim my money, Your Honour?” Williams inquired of presiding judge Carlo Mason.
“Sir, I’m not sure. You would need to go to the Sutton Street Court (a branch of the parish court that handles civil matters) and seek legal counsel,” the judge advised.
