KINGSTON, Jamaica — The law enforcement officers were emphatically encouraged to use their authority for the greater good, emphasizing their commitment to becoming ‘agents of change.’

During her address at the St Catherine South Police Headquarters Commander’s Parade, Prayer Breakfast, and Awards Ceremony in Portmore on Friday, Corporal Arleen McBean emphasized the need for police officers to respect themselves and recognize the significant role they play in society.

Reflecting on the theme, ‘Guardians of Change, Embracing Partnership and Innovation through Policing,’ Corporal McBean stressed the importance of mutual respect between citizens of Jamaica and the police force. She urged her colleagues to embody the spirit of change, not only in words but also in their actions, by maintaining a responsible presence on social media platforms.

Corporal McBean underscored the imperative for officers to adhere to the Jamaica Constabulary Force’s (JCF) code of conduct while in uniform. She cautioned that deviation from this code would not be supported by the JCF.

She asserted, “When you engage in various activities while adorned in your government uniform and utilize government resources in a manner that diminishes our progress, you will not have the backing of the police federation. If you decide to participate in social media trends, ensure that you epitomize the quality of our organization, stay abreast of technology, and prioritize the safety of law-abiding citizens, while ensuring that every criminal is brought to justice.”

Although not directly addressing the issue, Corporal McBean’s remarks appeared to allude to the recent disciplinary action taken by the JCF against officers involved in a TikTok trend. The JCF High Command had stated that the officers’ actions in the video reinforced negative stereotypes associated with the force, asserting that such representations were inconsistent with the ongoing efforts to build a professional organization.
