The PNP Worry About “Unprecedented” US Travel Warning
According to reports, Opposition Spokesman on Health, Dr. Alfred Dawes, emphasizes that the recent advisory issued by the United States, cautioning its citizens against traveling to Jamaica, should serve as a strong impetus for the Holness administration to take action.
The United States re-issued a level three travel advisory for Jamaica on Tuesday, January 23, 2024, urging American citizens to reconsider travel to the island due to prevalent crime and inadequate medical services.
Dr. Dawes highlights the unprecedented nature of this advisory and underscores the gravity of the situation.
The US advisory outlines the common occurrence of violent crimes such as home invasions, armed robberies, sexual assaults, and homicides. Additionally, it raises concerns about the insufficient standards for emergency services and hospital care, noting variations throughout the island and warning that response times and quality of care may not meet US standards. Public hospitals are described as under-resourced and only occasionally able to provide advanced or specialized care.
Dr. Dawes urges the government to address what he describes as a national embarrassment while also appealing to the Health Ministry to streamline the bureaucratic processes at the regional health authorities.
