Jamaica recorded 11 fewer murders in the first 20 days of 2024 than in 2023.

According to the latest crime statistics released by the Jamaica Constabulary, Jamaica has seen a decrease in violent murders during the first twenty days of 2024, with 46 recorded, which is eleven fewer than during the same period in 2023.

The JCF reports that there were 46 murders between January 1 and Saturday, January 20, which is 11 fewer than the 57 murders recorded over the corresponding period last year.

Several police divisions, including St. Mary, St. Thomas, St. Catherine South, St. Andrew South, Kingston West, Clarendon, Manchester, and Westmoreland, have seen reductions in crimes. However, there have been increases in Hanover, St. James, St. Ann, Kingston Central, and St. Catherine North.

The police have also reported a decrease in the number of shootings compared to last year, with nine more reports during the first 20 days of this year.

Furthermore, there has been a 70% decrease in reported cases of rape, a 3% decline in robberies, and an 8% decrease in break-ins.

Five suspects, including three juveniles, have been apprehended by the Old Harbour police after the discovery and confiscation of three firearms and ammunition along Old Harbour Bay Main Road on Sunday, January 21, 2024.

Reports indicate that at approximately 1:00 a.m., a team of law enforcement officers was patrolling the Old Harbour Bay community when they heard gunfire.

The team reacted promptly and intercepted a Toyota Probox motor car carrying six individuals along the Old Harbour Bay Main Road.

One individual reportedly fled from the vehicle and evaded capture.

Upon searching the vehicle, the officers uncovered three loaded pistols and a quantity of ammunition.

Subsequently, the police arrested the five remaining suspects, withholding their identities pending further investigations.

Authorities in St. Catherine have brought charges against an individual, widely known as ‘Satan,’ in connection to various serious offenses, including robbery, stemming from a domestic incident on December 16, 2023.

Keron Daley, 33 years old, a resident of Beacon Hill in St. Catherine, has been accused of robbery with aggravation, extortion, assault at common law, malicious destruction of property, and the possession of an offensive weapon.

It is alleged that on the evening of December 16, 2023, Daley was involved in a heated altercation with another individual, during which he reportedly brandished a ratchet knife and made an aggressive move towards the complainant. Subsequently, he proceeded to vandalize the complainant’s Toyota Wish, puncturing both front tires, before stealing JMD 30,000.00 from the vehicle.

Following the complaint lodged by the victim, the police initiated an investigation leading to the arrest and charging of the accused.

Daley’s court appearance is yet to be scheduled.
