PORTLAND, Jamaica – On Friday, August 18, the Portland police arrested a father who allegedly beat his common-law wife and their 15-year-old daughter.
According to the police, the complainants accused the suspect of beating the 15-year-old female child for attending a party; he told her not to go and then hit her mother for allowing her to go.
According to the reporting, the father felt disrespected because he had sternly objected to the child attending the party, and her mother overruled his decision.
The child reportedly sustained a broken wrist during the beating. And her mother is nursing bruises and swellings.
The police took both victims to the hospital for medical attention.
The police withheld the name of the suspect pending further investigation.
The unfortunate incident is brutal to comment on because something is missing from the story. But the way the father disciplined the child and the mother was high-handed.
Still, I blamed the mother. There are a lot of mothers who want to be their children’s friends, especially girls. And some of those female teenagers have secrets for their mothers, so they cannot ever say no. Either way, the father should have exercised better self-control.
Nevertheless, the incident exemplifies what will happen when mommy and daddy are not on the same page concerning discipline.
