The Independent Commission of Investigations (INDECOM) is currently investigating an incident that occurred at the residence of Member of Parliament Robert Montague in Oracabessa, St Mary.
According to reports, a police constable accidentally discharged their weapon, which is certain to raise concerns and questions about law enforcement officials’ safety protocols and training.
The incident reportedly occurred about 9:00 am Monday, May 1, 2023, while two constables were at Montague’s home carrying out guard duties.
According to preliminary reports, a gun accidentally discharged after one of the law enforcement officers handed his weapon to his colleague to hold while he went to relieve himself.
No one was injured in the incident. And it is still unclear whether Montague, the MP for St Mary Western, was at the house at the time of the incident.
According to the Police, Murders Declined by 16%: Since January.
The police have reported that up to the end of April 2023, just over 400 Jamaicans were murdered by thugs.
According to the police, the homicide rate continued downward in April after falling 21 percent between January 1 and March 31. However, the latest statistics from the JCF revealed 409 Jamaicans were murdered up to Sunday, April 30, 2023.
The parish of St. James continues to be the most murderous division in the country, with 54 murders since the beginning of the year. However, that is 30 fewer murders or a 35% decline for the same period last year.
Clarendon follows with 39 murders, which is 16 more than the same period last year, or a 69% increase. There is also a 35% increase in shooting in the parish.
Two States of Public Emergency have been declared in Clarendon thus far this year.
Next on the list is the St. Andrew South division, with 31 murders. Thus far this year, the division has recorded a 20% person decline in murders compared to last year. But shootings have increased by 10%.
Portland remains the least murderous division—only a single murder has been recorded in the parish this year.
According to the police, Jamaica has seen a decline in significant crimes compared to last year’s first four months. r
Rape is down by 38 percent, robbery is down by 27 percent, and break-ins have declined by 10 percent.
