The police fatally shot a suspect along the Spanish Town Bypass in St. Catherine, Jamaica, on Saturday. The Independent Commission of Investigations (INDECOM) has launched an investigation into this latest police-involved shooting.
Investigators have identified the deceased as Juwayne Powell, also known as “Fully Bad” and “John Whip.” He was a resident of Spanish Town.
According to the police, at approximately 6:12 p.m., authorities received reports of a man armed with a gun traveling from the Capture Land community toward the bypass.
A police team in an unmarked service vehicle responded to the community’s call for assistance. Upon reaching a section of the bypass, team members spotted a man who matched the suspect’s description near the Food for the Poor compound.
The police accosted the suspect and reportedly identified themselves to him.
Moments later the suspect allegedly removed a firearm from his waistband and opened fire on the cops.
In fear for their lives, the police took evasive action and returned fire.
After the shooting stopped, officers discovered the suspect with gunshot wounds. The police reported recovering a .38 caliber revolver loaded with four live rounds and two spent casings at the scene.
The officers rushed the injured man to the Spanish Town Hospital, where a doctor pronounced him dead.
Police say 3-year-old boy broke free from mother’s and ran into the path of a Toyota Probox.
A tragic incident occurred in Old Harbor, St Catherine on Saturday evening, June 27. Shockingly, a three-year-old boy lost his life when he broke free from his mother’s grip and ran into the path of an oncoming car.
The police have identified the child as Ozaiah Williams from Blackwood Gardens, Old Harbour Bay, St. Catherine. The heartbreaking tragedy occurred at about 6:30 p.m. on Terminal Road.
Investigators reported that Ozaiah ran away from his mother and onto the roadway, where a white 2017 Toyota Probox struck him. He sustained fatal injuries from the collision.
The Old Harbour Police are investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident.
Also, the Island Traffic Authority (ITA), reported that as of June 26, there have been 137 fatalities resulting from 123 traffic crashes across Jamaica.
