INDECOM investigates another police fatal shooting in Portmore

The Independent Commission of Investigations has begun an inquiry into the fatal shooting of a man by police in St. Catherine on Thursday night.

The authorities have yet to determine the identity of the deceased.

At approximately 8:45 p.m., members of the St. Catherine South Quick Response Unit were patrolling the Gilbert Avenue area in Dunbeholden, Portmore. They observed a man standing outside a building with an object that appeared to be a firearm tucked into his waistband.

The police approached the premises cautiously and heard a shuffling sound inside. Upon reaching an open door at the back, the officers saw two men; one of whom matched the description of an individual they had seen with a firearm.

When the man with the gun saw the police, he allegedly drew the weapon and fired at the police.

As a result, the officers took evasive action and returned fire, hitting one of the men. The police said the other man fled the scene.

Once the shooting ceased, police discovered the suspect with gunshot wounds, clutching a Beretta pistol loaded with eight rounds.

The officers transported the wounded man to the Spanish Town Hospital, where the authorities pronounced him dead.
