Prime Minister Dr. Andrew Holness announced the election date at a mass rally in Half-Way Tree on Sunday evening. He urged voters to ‘Choose Jamaica.’ He also requested support to grant the Jamaica Labor Party (JLP) an unprecedented third consecutive term in office.

According to Public opinion polls, the race to control Jamaica House is expected to be a close one for Jamaicans.

The JLP now controls 49 of the 63 seats in Parliament. It is campaigning on a platform of continued economic growth. They are also focusing on expanded infrastructure and stronger crime management, rallying support from Jamaicans.

Holness made an absurd reference to his administration’s poor handling of the economy. He described it as fiscal discipline. He falsely claimed reductions in public debt and touted the country’s economic resilience during turbulent global conditions.

After doing nothing for education, healthcare, water, and other essential services over the past ten years, he now promises greater investment in education and healthcare. He also plans to invest in housing, water, and road infrastructure. Additionally, he promises to implement a rural school bus system to benefit Jamaicans.

The opposition People’s National Party (PNP) holds a paltry 14 seats in Parliament. Meanwhile, it is pushing for a new direction. This direction is free from corruption, nepotism, and cronyism. Its ‘Time Come’ campaign has resonated well with the populace..

The party, which suffered from public divisions over the last decade, is now unified. It has cited its 2024 local government election performance as proof that it is regaining credibility with the Jamaican people.

The PNP is committed to building 50,000 affordable homes and providing a $500,000 deposit grant for young prospective homeowners. Additionally, they will implement various social support measures. These include expanded school meal programs and academic interventions in low-income areas. They will also provide full university scholarships for the first member of each family to attend college, aiming to support Jamaicans.

“We are seeking a mandate from the people, and we want to do so on the basis, not only of the failing and inadequacy of this government, but because of the promise that we are bringing to the Jamaican people,” Golding said at a recent rally in Brown’s Town, St Ann.
