Deadly gun violence claimed the lives of five men after gunmen opened gunfire at a football match in Pleasant Heights, Rockfort, in East Kingston on Monday night, the police said.
A police official, Superintendent Tommilee Chambers, head of the Kingston Eastern police, confirmed the deadly shooting.
Chambers said the massacre unfolded sometime after 8 p.m. at a “friendly football match.”
The number of injured persons remains unclear.
According to the head of Area 4 region, Assistant Commissioner Donovan Graham, several persons were transported to the hospital.
St Andrew, Kingston, and Port Royal make up the Area 4 region.
Chambers said Pleasant Heights, also known as Wareika Hills, has a deadly gun violence past, mainly driven by deadly gang feuds.
Still, she said it was too early to determine whether this latest incident is linked to gang warfare.
Further, Chambers said efforts were being made to reduce crime and violence in the area.
“We have been having peace in the Rockfort community for over two years,” she said.
The story is developing. There is much more to come.

Tekapunt DQ forces cancellation of Caymanas Park meet on Heroes’ Day
ST CATHERINE, Jamaica – What was supposed to be a dramatic day at Caymanas Park ended abruptly on Monday as officiating stewards abandoned the nine-race meet following the second race.
Tekapunt, well-ridden by Samantha Fletcher and trained by Ricardo Brown, crossed the finish line ahead of the field.
But in a dramatic turn of events, the stewards disqualified Tekapunt for interfering with My Sunshine in the final stretch. The stewards later awarded the race to Salud, who Raddesh Roman rode.
Irate punters disputed the decision, sparking a heated commotion. People placed debris everywhere, including the tunnel and the winners’ enclosure, prompting safety concerns.
The Jamaica Racing Commission stewards canceled the remaining races as the commotion escalated.
The official announcement echoed through the public address system:
“Due to unrest following a stewards’ decision after race two at Caymanas Park today, October 21, 2024, Heroes Day, which led to safety concerns for all horses, horsemen, punters, and attendees, all remaining races on the day have been abandoned.”
