Appeal Court is set to announce its decision in the Vybz Kartel case on Wednesday.

On Monday, July 29, 2024, the Court of Appeal of Jamaica made a significant announcement, revealing that the long-awaited ruling on the Vybz Kartel case is scheduled for Wednesday, July 31, 2024.

After careful consideration, the Appeal Court decided to reserve its decision last month, following compelling arguments put forth by Vybz Kartel’s legal team. They emphasized that he and his co-accused should not be subjected to a retrial for the regrettable incident involving Clive ‘Lizard’ William.

In a previous ruling, the Privy Council invalidated the men’s convictions, marking a crucial development in the case’s trajectory.

Vybz Kartel, known by his birth name Adidja Palmer, along with his co-accused individuals, namely Shawn ‘Shawn Storm’ Campbell, Kahira Jones, and Andre St. John, had faced conviction and life imprisonment in 2014 for the tragic events of 2011.

However, in a landmark decision in March, the Privy Council overturned these convictions, prompting the matter to be referred back to the Court of Appeal for a pivotal determination on the potential retrial.

The attorneys representing the men ardently argued that the continued detention of their clients was a violation of their constitutional rights. Additionally, they raised concerns about the possibility of a fair trial given the extensive publicity surrounding the case.

Conversely, the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions countered these assertions, asserting that the necessary legal safeguards are in place to ensure a fair trial for all parties involved.
