WESTMORELAND, JAMAICA: Law enforcement authorities have successfully apprehended a suspect for allegedly impersonating a Jamaica Public Service (JPS) worker.

Reports indicate that the individual, who is neither employed by JPS nor a contractor, was taken into custody by the police for extorting payments from residents in exchange for falsely promising to restore their electricity connection.

Legitimate JPS workers.

The arrest has prompted the light and power company to issue a stern warning: “JPS emphatically cautions the public against engaging with individuals or groups masquerading as JPS personnel and offering to reinstate electricity for a fee.”

Following Hurricane Beryl’s aftermath, JPS initially issued this warning in response to reports of fraudulent activities arising from the damage to the electrical infrastructure.

Emphasizing the importance of vigilance, JPS reiterated that all legitimate JPS employees carry photo identification and do not request payment for reconnection services.

Additionally, JPS reminded the public that impersonating a JPS worker is both unethical and illegal. The company underscored the potential dangers that this deceitful act poses to both the offenders and the customers who fall victim to their ruse, as well as to the JPS workers actively engaged in repairing the electrical infrastructure.

Furthermore, JPS stressed that such fraudulent behavior could significantly impede the ongoing restoration efforts.

To report any instances of impersonation, customers are urged to contact the Customer Care Centre at 888CALLJPS or call 888-225-5577 (FLOW) or 888-935-5577 (DIGICEL customers).

Customers can also access updated information through JPS’s social media profiles, the JPS WhatsApp channel, and official media channels.
