As discussions persist about the citizenship of People’s National Party president Mark Golding, he has expressed disappointment at the discrimination he has faced due to his skin color.
The Jamaica Labour Party has questioned Mr. Golding’s citizenship following his recent proposal for the constitutional reform process to reconsider the restriction on certain dual citizens from serving in the Jamaican Parliament.
They also criticized him for stating that Jamaica should not have “one foot in and one foot out of King Charles’s yard,” in reference to his advocacy for the Caribbean Court of Justice to replace the Privy Council as Jamaica’s final appellate court.
In an interview with The Gleaner, Mr. Golding confirmed that he is still a British citizen but maintains there is no legal basis for him to renounce his UK status.
At the Sturge Town Divisional Conference in Runaway Bay, St. Ann, Mr. Golding emphasized that he had nothing to hide. He criticized the JLP, accusing them of engaging in baseless politics and focusing on his skin color instead of substantial issues. He reminded them of Jamaica’s motto, ‘Out Of Many One People,’ and reaffirmed his Jamaican roots, stating that he was born in Jamaica, grew up there, and has never worked anywhere else in his life.
The opposition leader emphasized his commitment to serving the people of Jamaica, particularly the marginalized, and stressed the need for a PNP government that empowers and protects its citizens.
Addressing the speculation about his British citizenship, Mr. Golding proudly acknowledged his father’s heritage and contributions to Jamaica, highlighting that his dedication stemmed from genuine care, not his father’s nationality. He confidently asserted that the attempts to discredit him were futile and reaffirmed his unwavering commitment to serving the Jamaican people.
