Two prisoners and one cop were shot during a brawl at the Freeport lock-up.

A grave incident took place at the Montego Bay police lock-up in Freeport, St. James, on the night of May 18, 2024. According to reports, the altercation erupted among five prisoners, resulting in a near-deadly shooting.

The 35-year-old inmate accused of using a policeman’s firearm to shoot at his fellow inmates is now facing charges of assault, wounding, and weapon discharge.

The conflict between the five prisoners unfolded around 7:30 p.m., quickly escalating into a violent altercation within the cell block. During the altercation, one prisoner sustained stab wounds to the upper body.

Responding officers, including an off-duty policeman, intervened. The off-duty officer reportedly placed his firearm under a desk near the cell block.

In the chaos, the injured prisoner was separated from the melee and placed in an area where the off-duty officer had left his service revolver. The prisoner allegedly seized the weapon, pointing it at one of the officers and demanding the gate to the cell block be opened.

The officer complied, and the armed prisoner proceeded to fire shots within the cell area, injuring one prisoner and grazing an officer. Despite a female officer’s attempt to intervene, she was overwhelmed and unable to act.

Another officer managed to take the female officer’s weapon and fired at the armed prisoner, hitting him in the upper body and left foot. The prisoner then reportedly discarded the firearm on the floor.

All the injured individuals were promptly transported to the Cornwall Regional Hospital for urgent medical attention.

The Independent Commission of Investigations (INDECOM) has launched an investigation into a recent police shooting in White River, St Ann. The incident occurred on Sunday, May 19, 2024, when a 30-year-old man from Exchange in St. Ann allegedly attempted to stab another man with a knife.

Reportedly, at approximately 5 p.m., a police patrol team witnessed the man in the act of attacking his intended victim. In response, the police intervened, resulting in the alleged attacker being shot and injured. Following the incident, law enforcement recovered the knife and arranged for the suspect to receive medical treatment at St Ann’s Bay Hospital.

A heartbreaking incident occurred in the Helicon district of St. Ann, Jamaica, as a woman was fatally shot at her home on Sunday, May 19, 2024.

The victim, identified as Nadia Binns, a laborer in her 40s, had just returned from church and entered her one-room dwelling when the sound of gunshots echoed through the area.
