Four men from St. Elizabeth in Jamaica have been charged with abusing eight American children at a boarding school for troubled teens in the parish. The boys, aged 14 to 18, were removed from the Atlantis Leadership Academy in Treasure Beach last month after signs of abuse and neglect were observed during an unannounced visit.
The accused men are facing charges including assault and cruelty to a child. One more person is in custody, and the investigation is ongoing. Most of the boys are still in Jamaican custody while efforts are being made by their families for their release.
The attorney for the academy and its founder has denied the allegations of abuse. The American Embassy in Kingston has also been involved in this case. Seven teens have been placed in childcare facilities, and one 18-year-old has returned to the United States. The case is set to be heard in court again on April 30.

Voter Apathy Poses a Threat to Jamaica’s Democracy, Warns Patterson.
Former Prime Minister PJ Patterson is concerned about the decreasing voter turnout in recent national elections, as it poses a threat to the country’s democracy.
He believes that major political parties and the entire country should be worried about this trend. Patterson thinks that the decreasing interest in voting may be linked to the diminishing differences between the People’s National Party (PNP) and the Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) and other issues.
He mentioned that many people feel their vote won’t impact their lives, and there is a growing focus on individual materialism. Patterson emphasized the importance of understanding the significance of universal adult suffrage, which allowed all adults in Jamaica to participate in the choice of government for the first time in November 1944.
He also highlighted the lack of education about Jamaica’s history, struggles, and the value of each individual. The voter turnout has been declining steadily, with the lowest turnout recorded in 2020 since 1983. The turnout was only 29.6 percent in the most recent local government elections on February 26.
