SPANISH TOWN, ST CATHERINE, JAMAICA–A St Catherine Circuit Court judge sentenced a St Catherine man to six years in prison for defrauding an American senior citizen in a sweepstakes racket.
Justice Bertram Morrison handed down the sentence in the St Catherine Circuit on Friday, October 27, 2023, after a jury returned a guilty verdict.
Kemar Townsend was convicted of conspiracy to obtain money by false pretense, engaging in a transaction involving criminal property and possession of criminal property. Attorney-at-law Davian Vassel represented him.
The Crown led evidence that in June 2023, Townsend told the 72-year-old complainant that she won US$682 million plus two motor cars and US$297,000 in refunds.
He told the woman that the money was in Jamaican banks and that she needed to send funds for processing.
The complainant testified via video link that she sent several sums of money to an account held by Townsend.
The court heard testimony of Townsend’s withdrawal of the respective sums amounting to US$44,000.
In his defense, Townsend testified that he thought the monies were sent to him by his girlfriend in Switzerland.

Illicit drugs and weapons were seized at some schools in St. Catherine South
St. CATHERINE, JAMAICA – Illicit drugs and weapons in Jamaican schools have been thorns in school administrators’ sides for many moons, but the subject never gets talked about until something serious happens. However, this see no evil, hear no evil approach is changing.
Recently, the JCF Territorial Officer Deputy Superintendent Paulette Baker revealed that several searches carried out in schools across the St. Catherine South division yielded alarming quantities of illicit drugs and weapons.
She disclosed the seizures during a Safety In Schools meeting at the Portmore police station, organized by the Jamaica Constabulary Force, to minimize violence and indiscipline in schools.
DSP Baker said safety has become a priority in high schools amid a spate of violent incidents in recent months.
“It is not by mistake that we invited members from the drugs abuse unit to be here to present to you because, during that search, we would have come upon ganja, all the different items that we are not expecting to see our students within schools, weapons. And, of course, we know we would have seen the increase in school violence in recent times, not only in the St. Catherine South division but all over the island.”
