Happy 61st Birthday, Jamaica!

Jamaica gained independence from the United Kingdom on August 6, 1962 after more than 300 years of British colonial rule. The island became an imperial colony in 1509 when Spain conquered the Indigenous Taino people.

Still, Jamaica remained a member of the British Commonwealth, retaining the British monarch as head of state. Alexander Bustamante was elected in April 10, 1962, and became the first Prime Minister of Jamaica.
