Law enforcement officers attached to the St Catherine North Police Division launched a surge operation in the St John’s Road community, Spanish Town, St Catherine, on Monday, July 17, 2023, in response to a recent upsurge in criminal activity, including the slaying of a mother and her son.
The police identified the deceased as Georgia Coleman, age 50, a businesswoman of St John’s Road, and her son, Jerome Walters, age 21, a bus conductor of Railway Lane, Spanish Town, St Catherine.
According to reports, on Monday, July 17, Coleman and her son were at the Matriarch, a business establishment on St John’s Road, when two thugs on a motorbike opened fire–hitting Walters multiple times.
The men opened fire at them, hitting Walters multiple times. Coleman reportedly ran, but her attackers pursued and shot her.
Concerned citizens alerted the police. Upon arrival, the police rushed the victims to the hospital, where authorities pronounced them dead.
On Tuesday, the police announced that the surge would continue until calm gets restored in the community. The police ask residents in the affected districts to cooperate with the police.
Police charged ‘Babyface’ Spanish Town Road bar gun attack on a woman.
Gum Shoes assigned to the Hunts Bay CIB reported that they charged a man with the shooting of a woman in the head at a bar located on Spanish Town Road on Sunday, July 2, 2023.
The police identified the accused as Javonie ‘Babyface’ McLeish, age 26, a Spanish Town Road resident. The police charged him with shooting with intent, possessing a prohibited weapon, unauthorized possession of ammunition, and using a prohibited weapon to commit a Felony.
According to the Hunts Bay CIB, on Sunday, July 2, 2023, at about 4 pm, the accused man rode up to the bar and shot the woman in her head.
He then escaped on the motorcycle.
Concerned patrons rushed the woman to the hospital, where the authorities admitted her in serious but stable condition.
The police confirmed that they arrested the accused based on an eyewitness account of the incident. They charged him after a question and answer session in the presence of his lawyer on July 13, 2023.
The accused court appearance date is pending.
Peachon Street vendors complained that sewage overflowing in the streets is affecting business.
Peachon Street vendors in downtown Kingston have complained that their sales have declined due to ongoing sewage issues which flooded the street.
The vendors said foul-smelling water has taken over the streets where they sell goods, triggering significant health concerns.
“We have been calling on the authorities for months to address the problem, but the calls have fallen on deaf ears,” one female vendor said on Saturday.
The vendors said customers are staying away from the area because of the sewage situation.
