Should Jamaica put boots on the ground in Haiti?

Jamaica's PM

“Jamaican Prime Minister Andrew Holness told the island’s House of Representatives on Tuesday that he wants to help Haiti and “support a return to a reasonable level of stability and peace, which would be necessary for any inclusive, democratic process to take root.”
The announcement appears to be the first time a Western hemisphere nation has publicly offered boots on the ground after Haiti’s prime minister and other top officials requested the immediate deployment of foreign troops in early October amid a crippling fuel siege blamed on the country’s most powerful gangs.
UN Secretary-General António Guterres and La Lime have backed Haiti’s plea to no avail.”

Once Jamaicans realize America and Canada are not interested in putting boots on the ground in Haiti, everybody is up in arms over Andrew Holness’ decision to send police and soldiers to help Haiti. And there is a myriad of reasons for those who opposed the Prime Minister’s use as the premise for their argument.

But some who speak ill of the PM’s decision to send Jamaicans to Haiti to help a sister country have yet to learn about the country-country relationship. They act as though Jamaicans will be there by themselves. On the contrary, Jamaica will be part of a Commonwealth coalition. And there are about 52 countries in the Commonwealth.

So, it’s only fitting for Jamaica to do what it can. Also, Haiti’s situation is entirely different than our situation in Jamaica. We are talking about thugs that overthrow a legitimate government.

Yes, Jamaica could be in better shape, but we can still lend a helping hand to Haiti. Look at Cuba, they are not better off than us, yet they never hesitate to send their doctors and nurses to help us. Some people only give out of abundance. But some people will give away their last two mites.
