The authorities have identified the deceased as Roshaine Smith, a 33-year-old barber from Tryall Heights in Spanish Town.
According to reports, at about 5:30 p.m., police responded to Rosemary Lane in the Tryall Heights community. Upon reaching a section of the lane, they observed Smith behaving suspiciously.
When the lawmen accosted Smith, he allegedly pulled a handgun from a bag over his shoulder and fired at the them.
In response, the police took defensive action and returned fire.
When the shooting ceased, cops found Smith on ground suffering from gunshot wounds, and a firearm allegedly lying beside him.
The police transported the victim to Spanish Town Hospital, where the authorities pronounced him dead on arrival.
The Independent Commission of Investigations has initiated a probe into the incident to ensure transparency throughout the process.

The police identified the deceased as Danville Palmer, from a Hannah Town address in West Kingston.

Several injured after bus overturns on PJ Patterson Highway
